The commute back and forth to London is one thing that I have never enjoyed about working. It just always feels like wasted time. When I stepped into a new role a few years back I was desperate to find some motivation, support and inspiration from other leaders. A friend of mine, who I sometimes bump into on the train asked me if I had ever listened to a podcast. That’s how it started….
I dimly remembered podcasts from when I had an iPod (which is lingering somewhere in a draw). A few days later I found that my iPhone had a built in ‘podcast’ app and that in seconds I could browse a huge library of podcast interviews with successful entrepreneurs and leaders, from whom I was able to glean precious support, inspiration, advice and knowledge. Every day for two years, I listened to podcasts on the way to and from work. It felt like doing an MBA. I would hear stories that resonated with my own challenges trying to set up and grow a new business, and I would be able to then test out those ideas during the day and then listen to another inspiring story in the evening. I was hooked on the power of podcasts.
Fast forward to January 2016 and I launched the first episode of the ClickZ Digital Marketing podcast. In each episode I interview a different marketing leader and I start by asking them to share their own personal story. Why did they choose marketing, how did they get where they are, what advice do they have for others coming into the industry. I hope that these stories will prove useful to marketers who are looking for the same inspiration and motivation. The second half of the podcast is focused on the interviewee’s area of expertise, we hear what are the big disruptive trends, and then get practical advice for what marketers need to do to prepare.
